The Department of Laboratory Medicine started
in 1977. It operates with excellent equipment for education and research
(see the structure). More than 150 routine tests and about 60 high
specific analyses are done there. The department is a place for
education of medical students and residents.

The Department of
Microbiology and Immunology is a place for education of students and
residents in Microbiology and Immunology. The staff consists of nine
physicians specialists in microbiology, two of them with subspecialty in
immunology, three in virusology. The leadership of the Department is in
the hands of two associated professors.
Services:
1. Broad spectrum of microbiologic and immunologic tests made according
to the accepted medical standards.
2.Participation in the National System of the National Institute for
Infectious and Parasitic Diseases for inner quality control supervise,
as well as in the system for monitoring of the antibiotic resistance
control
3. Participation in the policy of the hospital for adequate antibiotic
therapy control
4. Identification of bacteria and fungi by Vitek 1 and Sceptor
5.Detection of the minimal inhibitor concentration by Vitek 1 and
Sceptor and expert's report by Vitek
6. Immunologic diagnosing of autoimmune disorders
7.Interpratation of highly specific immunologic tests
8. Detection of corineform bacteria

- System Vitek 2 (bioMerieux) and Sceptor (BD) for identification of
bacteria and definition of antibiotic resistance with expert's report
and recommendations for antimicrobial drug
- ELISA reader, immunoflorescent microscope "Nicon", invert microscope
for cell cultures

The Department of Rheumatology began as a separate
unit in 1993. It is situated on 15a "V. Aprilov" str. and operates with
40 beds. The staff consists of specialists in rheumatology, internal
medicine and rheumocardiology. It is a place for education of medical
students and residents in the field of internal medicine and
rheumatology.
Services:
1.Detecting and treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis,
polyarthritis Bechterev, Reiter syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome lupus
eritematodes, systemic sclerosis and other rheumatoid diseases,
arthritis and osteoporosis.
2. Arthroscopy with or without sinovectomy by “tidal” lavage on knee
joint
3. Detecting of crystal arthropathy by polaroid microscopy
4.Ultrasonography according to the international standards of joints and
soft tissue
5.International program for diagnosing and treatment of patients with
osteoporosis

The Department of Cardiology operates with 60
beds, divided in four divisions (intensive care unit, main division,
cardiac function division, invasive cardiology division). It is a place
for education of medical students and residents in the field of internal
medicine and cardiology.
Services:
1.Treatment of patients with disorders of the heart
2. Full spectrum of functional diagnosing in cardiology (elecrocardiography,
including Neb ECG, ultrasound of the heart, stress echocardiography,
veloergometry, Holter monitoring)
3.Coronar angiography, percutaneous transluminar angioplasty & stenting,
determining of electrophysiological index.
4. Fibrinolytic therapy of acute myocardial infarct
5. Methods for restoring the sinus rhythm by medications and
electroversion.

doctoral fellow are working there. Two clinical centers are opened at
the Department - educational center for diabetics and diabetic foot
problems and tratment.

The Department began in 1989. It is
situated on 15a "V. Aprilov" str. and operates with 40 beds. High level
educated specialists in internal medicine and nephrology and a professor
are working there. A room for kidney biopsy and ultrasound are opened.
The haemodyalisis center started in 1974. The equipment consists of 15
up to date apparatuses – FRESENIUS-4008 and R 4008 S with monitoring
control of the necessary parameters and programs. Preference to
bicarbonate haemodyalisis by liquid or dry (Bi Bag) concentrates.
Services:
1.Diagnosing and treatment of patients with disorders of the kidney,
acute renal failure and drug intoxications.
2.Full spectrum of exta-corporal detoxic methods – hemofiltration,
bicarb bases hemofiltration and hemabsorbtion and plasmaferesis.
3.Follow-up of patients with chronic renal failure and kidney
transplantation

The
Department began as a separate unit in 1946 and operates with 86 beds.
It is the outstanding pediatrician unit with traditions in seeking the
highest standards of treatment, research and education of students,
post-graduated students and residents in pediatrics & medical genetics
on the territory of South-Easter Bulgaria. Tree extra units are opened -
intensive care unit with 6 beds, emergency room (in corporation with
Emergency Center of Plovdiv, available for consultations 24 hours a day)
and daily hospitalization room. The Department consists of four
divisions with the following sectors:
- respiratory and allergic disorders
- cardiology and rheumatology
-gastroenterology
- nephrology
- endocrinology and metabolic disorders
-oncology and hematology
- inborn and inherited diseases
The staff of the Department consults outpatients in the following
consulting rooms:

Medical genetics division with cytology lab and perinatal diagnosing
The division's staff fulfills the recommendations of the National
program for prevention of inborn disorders financed by the Ministry of
Health and delivers free consultations
1. families with two or more abortions
2. retarded patients
3. inborn abnormalities – anencephaly, hydrocephaly, microcephaly, spina
biffida, craniofacial defects, heart and kidney disorders
4. pregnant women older than 35 years
5.physicaly and sexually impaired patients
6. families with a child with hemophilia, thalassaemia, muscular and
neural dystrophy, cystic fibrosis and all the rest inherited diseases
7.genetic cytology of bone marrow aspirate in children with cancer or
hematologic disorders
8.chromosome tests for controversial fatherhood ( paid )
