The Department began
as a Department of general surgery and urology in 1949 and in 1967
was found as a Department of Thoracic and Abdominal Surgery with two
Divisions:
1. Division for general and abdominal surgery that operates with 40
beds.
2. Division for thoracic surgery that operates with 20 beds. The
staff uses WATS for more than 6 years.
Services:
Operative treatment of all surgery disorders and especially those of
the thorax with the exception of the disorders of the heart and
aorta.
Research:
1.Surgery for gastric ulcer and cancer.
2.Laparoscopic operation by VideoAssisted Thoracoscopy of chronic
cholecystitis is a routine method for more than 8 years.
3. Pulmonary cancer.
4.Treatment of pleural effusions.

The Department is
situated on 66 "Peshtersko shosse" str. and operates with 50
beds. .
The staff has a high educational level in the field of
cancer surgery, thoracic surgery and endocrine surgery.
Services:
1.Operative treatment of all surgery disorders and
especially those of the liver and gall-bladder, endocrine
glands, stomach and rectum.
2.Leadership in Bulgaria in operation of abdominal hernias
with plastic prosthesis.
Equipment:
1.Intra-operative EMG for vocal cords "Neurosing 100" for
operations on thyroid gland and other neck operations.
2.Set for mini-invasive endoscopy (laparo- and thoraco- )
procedures in the abdominal and thoracic cavities.

DIVISION for
CARDIAC SURGERY |

It is the
youngest Clinic in the structure of the Hospital - has begun
in 2001. It is a separate unit, situated on 66 "Peshtersko
shosse" str., which operates with 29 beds. The structure
consists of two operating rooms with up-to-date equipment,
intensive care room with 12 beds, pre-and post- operative
wards with 17 beds, that can be transformed to intensive in
case of emergency. The division has it's own quicklab.
The Division provides all the elements the highest standards
of care with a human spirit that assures patients are
treated with compassion and respect, so that the comfort,
privacy and dignity of each patient is maintained at all
times.

VASCULAR SURGERY |

РThe Department is
situated on 66 "Peshtersko shosse" str. and operates with 56
beds. Twelve physicians (8 specialists in vascular surgery)
and a associated professor are working there. The Department
is an unique unit on the territory of South-Eastern Bulgaria
. Annually more than 1200 operations are done at the
Department, which is a place for education of medical
students and post-graduated students in the field of
vascular surgery.
Services:
1.Emergic vascular surgery - vascular traumas, acute
thromboses, aneurism's rupture.
2.All types of vascular reconstructions ( arterial and
venous disorders, aneurisms)
3.Pacemaker's implanting
4.Arteria - vein fistulas for haemodialyses

PEDIATRIC SURGERY |

The Department is
situated on 66 "Peshtersko shosse" str. and operates with 46
beds. It has a 50 years history as an unique unit on the
territory of South-Eastern Bulgaria. Two extra divisions are
situated at the Department:
-Intensive care & anesthesiology
-Plastic and craniofacial surgery
There are 4 operative rooms with up-to-date pediatric
equipment for anesthesiology and intensive care.
Some of the physicians are specialists in general and
pediatric surgery, and the rests in pediatrics,
anesthesiology and intensive care, craniofacial surgery and
ultrasound. Surgical treatment is based on methods learned
at European and American clinics, as well as original own
methods.
Services:
1.Operative treatment of all surgery disorders in childhood
with the exception of the disorders of the heart.
2.Operative treatment of neonates - congenital
abnormalities, hypospadia, epispadia, cryptorchism,
anomalies of the abdomen, echinococcosis, vascular
abnormalities, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, facial
abnormalities, craniofacial surgery.

of 6 physicians, 3 Ph.D. doctors and two associated
professors. The Department has traditions in education of
medical students and post-graduated students.
Services:
1.Detection, treatment and prevention of acute, chronic,
inborn, traumatic and plastic urologic disorders of male.
2.All urological procedures, except kidney transplantation.
Comfort, privacy and dignity of each patient is maintained
at all times.
Equipment:
1.All necessary apparatus for diagnosing (X-ray, ultrasound,
apparatus for urodynamics “Urocompact”).
2.Laser and conventional electroresector for bladder

OTOLARYNGOLOGY |

The Department began in
1945. It is situated on 66 "Peshtersko shosse" Str. and
operates with 40 beds. There are 3 operation rooms and a
room for endoscopy. Fifteen physicians, specialists in
otolaryngology are working there, one of them is a
specialist in oncology.
The leadership of the Department is in the hands of two
associated professors. Five physicians of the staff are
Ph.D.
The high level education of the staff makes the Department
outstanding in South-Eastern Bulgaria. It is a place for
education of medical students and post-graduated students.
Services:
1.Surgery for cancer of the larynx and hypo-pharynx and new
techniques for functional surgery of larynx for these
patients.
3.Surgery for patients with tumors of the salivary glands,
thyroid gland, nose and sinuses and other tumors of the head
and the neck.
4.Operative treatment of the sleep apnea, chronic otitis and
its complications, endo-nasal micro chirurgic operations of
the nose and sinuses, functional and esthetic surgery of the
nose.

OPHTHOLMOLOGY |

The mission of the
Department is to detect, treat, prevent, consult and
research ophthalmic disorders, to educate students and
post-educated students. The Department operates with 40
beds. All the physicians, working there are specialists in
ophthalmology and four of them are Ph.D. Seven consulting
rooms for outpatients are situated on its territory (cancer
of the eye, disorders of the uvea, laser therapy, florescent
angiography, glaucoma, ultrasound, prevention of child's
vision). Yearly more than 20 000 patients are visiting the
consulting rooms.
Services:
- surgery for cataract and implanting of an artificial lens.
- non-invasive and laser treatment of glaucoma
- surgery for retina rip off
- ophthalmic oncology surgery
- esthetic operations of the lids, conjunctives, wrinkles ,
etc
-surgery for strabismus
-reconstructing surgery and YAG laser therapy on anterior
chamber of the eye
- vascular abnormalities of the eye, in corporation with the
departments of neurology, cardiology and medicine
laboratory
- florescent angiography in inflammatory, degenerative,
vascular and tumor diseases of the posterior chamber of the

beds. The staff of the Department is ready to offer
immediate access to the highest level of subspecialty
neurosurgical care and timely ongoing communications.
Services:
– non-invasive and surgical treatment of neurosurgical
disorders of the head, brain, spine and spinal cord
- surgical treatment of aneurisms and arterio-vein
abnormalities of the brain
- surgical treatment of stroke
- surgical treatment of tumors of the spine and spinal cord
- surgical treatment of tumors and traumas of the
neural plexuses and periferic nerves
- surgical treatment of degenerative disorders of the spine,
including hernias and fusions
- surgical treatment of traumas of the spinal cord,
including decompression, alienation, metal implanting
- surgical treatment of brain tumors behind the eye bulb and
glomus caroticus's tumors
- surgical treatment of hydrocephaly by implanting a valve

ANESTHESIOLOGY & CRITICAL CARE |

The
Department has its beginning in 1974. The goals of the
Department are to provide excellent anesthesia,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation and intensive care. The staff
has a high educational level. The Department is a place for
education of medical students and residents. Annually
educational courses for emergency are held.
Services:
1.Anesthesiology provides anesthesia services in the
following areas:
- 11 surgery departments (patients' examination and
preparation before anesthesia, providing an anesthesia,
postoperative analgesia and reanimation)
- trauma bay
- emergency room for outpatients with problems in the field
of internal medicine
- X-ray division, angiography room, cardiac consulting room,
GI consulting room, department of pediatrics
2.The staff of the Department is available for consultation
24 hours a day for patients in critical care at all the
hospitals on the territory of South-Eastern Bulgaria.
3.From 10 600 to 13 500 anesthesia for surgery on 43
operating-tables and 1 100 sedations for detecting
procedures, implanting of central venous access devices are
made annually.
4.The Critical care division operates with 13 beds for
post-operative patients in need of intensive care (sepsis,
cardio-respiratory distress, disorders of haemostasis,
traumas, brain injures, coma, acute respiratory failure in
pneumonias).
5.The department is one of the National centers for organ
and tissue donation.
Equipment:
The operating rooms and the critical care division operates
with up-to-date appliances for monitoring and anesthesia
with expensive anesthetics inhaled by low gas flow. The
highest standards for treatment are used at the critical
care division.

Клиника по лицево-челюстна хирургия е
основана през 1973 г. Тя е специализирана за оказване на
спешна и планова медицинска помощ на населението от Южна
България. Разположението е на IV
етаж в хирургичния блок. Легловия фонд се състои от 25
легла. Болничните стаи са за двама пациенти и са оборудвани
със санитарен възел
сигнализационна система, телевизия.
Медицинската дейност обхваща диагностика и
лечението на хирургичните заболявания в лицево-челюстната
област - травматология, септична хирургия, онкохирургия,
рекунструктивна хирургия, естетична хирургия.
Използваната апаратура за диагностика е
разположена в диагностичните звена на болницата - рентген,
компютърен томограф, ядрено-магнитен резонанс, ангиограф,
ортопантомограф, ехограф.
Клиниката е оборудвана с
хирургичен инструментариум, електронож, коагулатор, лазер,
осцилотом, апарати за обща анестезия, кислородни инсталации
и т.н.Клиниката е база за
специализация по лицево-челюстна хирургия и обучение на
студенти по медицина и стоматология от медицинския
университет.
